Strawberry Creek Outfitters: Granby, Colorado Trophy Elk Outfitting Business for Sale

Over-the-counter elk licenses and trophy elk hunting

Over-the-counter elk licenses and trophy elk hunting

One of the biggest difficulties in Colorado outfitting is making sure you have licenses for your hunters. Some units take up to 10 years to draw, especially where there are high-quality bulls. This outfitting business is situated in Game Management Units 28 and 18, where a hunter can purchase a license over the counter up to the night before the hunt. No draw is necessary for archery and 2nd and 3rd rifle season hunters, and first and fourth rifle season tags can be drawn with zero or one or two preference points.

Great success on good bulls

Great success on good bulls

Over the past 15 years or so, Strawberry Creek Outfitters has averaged between 65% and 85% success for their hunters. The average bulls in the area are nice 5x5 to 6x6 bulls. Look up the location of Strawberry Creek on a topo quadrangle: 40.0753, -107.78. See how close that is to Rocky Mountain National Park? Occasionally park bulls will drift onto this permit, and that’s probably why SCO hunters have bagged bulls that scored 364 and 400 SCI.

U.S. Forest Service permits

U.S. Forest Service permits

Strawberry Creek Outfitters has a special use permit for 160 U.S. Forest Service service days for elk hunting. What does that mean? Well, four guided hunters on a 5-day hunt would use 20 service days. You could outfit 20-25 hunters on quality elk and deer hunts a year. The permit allows two different camp locations in the national forest. There is a possibility that the Forest Service may approve additional user days and camp locations for a new owner.

Easy-to-run camp locations

Easy-to-run camp locations

The Forest Service allows SCO to corral their horses in the high country, which makes for a much easier time of it in camp. No high lines, no hobbling make it a snap to keep your horses in good shape. The trails into camp are relatively easy, and hunting around camp is excellent.

Horse pasture and cabin lease available for base of operations

The owner of this business has a 1,000-acre grazing lease that is right at the base of the mountain where the hunting takes place. He is willing to lease horse pasture and a functional cabin at a very reasonable rate to the new owner of Strawberry Creek Outfitters as a base of operations.

I have personally hunted with this outfitter, Mancel Griggs, and have learned about his permit and operation. This area has a phenomenal ratio of mature bulls. I guided elk hunting for over 20 years, and I would guess that of all the elk sign we saw (and there was a lot of it!), probably 60% of the tracks came from large mature bulls. Truly, this area is a sleeper, where you can consistently find large trophy elk without having to wait several years to draw a tag. The owner's sons are willing to work for the new owner, and they're very knowledgeable, capable, and hard-working. Put this deal together and you'll have a good one! (By the way, my hunting experience was similar to most of Mancel's clients--I killed the largest bull I've ever harvested!) I have personally inspected the assets of this business. The tents and equipment are all in good shape, and the horses are well trained, stout, sound, and willing. These are good horses that have been used for handicapped riding programs, so they're gentle, trustworthy, and mountain savvy. The terrain is mountainous and somewhat rugged, but the success rate tells the story. We had 5 hunters in camp and took two 6x6's and a 4x4.
